red dot design award for RK DESIGN

Elaborate – on style and form
They come in an infinite number of forms, colours and models. Spectacles are a very direct expression of a person’s individuality, and alongside comfort, one’s personal sense of style plays an important part in deciding which spectacle frame one finally wants to wear. Despite the pressure of fashion, spectacles are always more than just decorative accessories; users wear them every day and have high demands in terms of wearing comfort. Alongside a huge variety of forms, the design of spectacle frames has thus brought forth many new materials and mechanisms over the last few years – the latest spectacle frames for instance are highly flexible and so light that their wearers hardly sense them any more. The Bob model from the Time Out collection translates an innovative idea for the construction of a spectacle frame into a new and consistent design. Its highly distinctive appearance emerged from a patented temple hinge that is constructed entirely without any screws. The distinctive and high-class appearance of this new spectacle frame is further enhanced by new lens holders which have been matched to consistently blend into the overall design. This innovative shape is highly complex: the spectacle is made of individual parts that are handmade and cut out from a 0.5 mm thin high-grade steel sheet. The spectacles weigh in at only 15 grammes and thus are appealingly light and easy to wear. Their comfort is further enhanced by the smooth and flexible fold-out temples. The spectacles were designed for wearers with a high sense of style and curiosity for innovative and elaborate mechanics – an idea that turns high-value comfort into an everyday experience.

The design experts in this year's red dot jury were impressed by the lightness of the design and awarded the Time Out Model Bob a "red dot: best of the best."
